Supernovae are the dominant source of chemical enrichment galaxies, and they an important energy to heat interstellar medium accelerate cosmic rays. Our knowledge supernovae in Milky Way is based mostly on study Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), providing (incomplete) record activity over last ~100,000 yr.
